Hello everyone, in this video I'll be showing you how to use our Comments Spy tool.
So this is a simple tool that you point at any website and it will scan each page on the website and try to extract all the comments, all the outbound links in those comments, and it will count the amount of comments on each page.
Now, there are several reasons you might want this sort of information. You might want the comments themselves to see what normal users are saying — what sort of responses they're giving to certain articles, what they’re asking to see more of, and what topics they’re discussing.
You might also want the comment count for each page so you can work out which content (perhaps on a competitor’s website) has the most engagement — meaning, which pages have the most comments. Many SEO professionals believe engagement is a ranking factor.
Also, the more people that comment on your website, the more opportunities you have to collect email addresses when they comment, helping you build a substantial email list.
Finally, you may want the outbound links in those comments, because sometimes when you’re trying to find websites to sell a product to or reach out to, Google searches often only return large websites. Looking at comment links is a great way to discover smaller businesses or one-person sites — people commenting and linking to their own websites.
Now that you have a good idea of why you might want to use this tool, let’s run through the options and then show it in action.
The first time you use this tool on a new website, you just need to check that it understands the HTML format of the comments. We’ll use a random cooking website here — a page we know has comments — and we’ll run a single-page check. You can see it’s come back with links, comments, and comment counts. So that’s everything we need.
Next, we’ll go through the settings:
Do we want to extract links?
Do we want to extract the comments themselves?
Do we only want to show pages with comments?
When we extract comments, we’ll also build a comment cloud. At the end of the scan, when we show results, you’ll see a cloud of the most frequently mentioned phrases by users in the comments. This gives you a quick overview of what people are talking about without scrolling through thousands of comments.
We’ll also hide duplicate comments to make things easier to read. So, with our settings configured and our test page ready — and knowing the software can understand the comment format — we’ll set the scan speed. If you’re sure the website won’t block the IP address, you can set the speed to 10; if unsure, set it to 5.
Alright, let’s start our scan. After a few minutes, we have a full page of results. You can see the comment cloud — phrases, one to three words long, that people comment most often across the site.
Scrolling down, you can see the pages and their comment counts. Ordered by comment count, you can spot the most popular pages. For example, the Creamy Cauliflower Sauce page has 982 comments — a really high level of engagement. It likely ranks well and has lots of user-generated long-tail keywords that help it appear for more searches.
Now, let’s look at the export options. Because this tool generates a lot of data, you’ll likely want to export and process it elsewhere.
You can:
Export pages and comment counts as CSV.
Export pages and their comments.
Export the word cloud.
Export pages and all outbound links.
All exports are available in CSV format.
That concludes our video. Hopefully, you can see how this tool is great for analyzing which pages have the most engagement on a website, for extracting outbound links to find smaller websites, and for gathering valuable user insights.
Thank you for watching.
